On the weekend before Election Day, excited California volunteers were looking for a way to help the Obama campaign, even though their state was safely in the Democratic column. Using Activate technology, Obama volunteers in California talked with more than 15,000 people in the battleground state of Indiana.
Keep Reading.Frank Kratovil, a Democrat, was able to win a tight race in a largely Republican district important to the GOP. As the campaign came down to the wire on Election Day, the campaign manager utilized Activate to quickly focus volunteer calls to underperforming districts where poll checkers reported low Democratic turnout. Kratovil's volunteers connected with 32,431 voters - and 18,000 calls were made in the 5-6 p.m. hour alone. Kratovil won the race by 2,000 votes.
_"Activate made a huge impact on our campaign. We were able to re-focus our volunteers from underperforming districts on Election Day and make sure those people got one more call before the polls closed. Because we won by only 3,000 votes, we know that Activate made a difference."

South Dakota Measure 11
This highly contested ballot measure sought to ban most abortions in the state. Planned Parenthood volunteers used Activate to make 30,000 calls to voters. The measure was defeated by 40,000 votes. Activate technology allowed volunteers from other states to make phone calls to targeted voters in South Dakota, freeing up Planned Parenthood volunteers in the state to go door-to-door and talk to voters in person.
California Proposition 4
Although pre-election polls indicated that the Proposition 4 parental notification initiative was likely to pass, Planned Parenthood used Activate technology to contact 300,000 voters. The measure was defeated by 390,000 votes. The effort employed sophisticated micro-targeting to identify voters by demographic and geographic information - for example, "middle-aged, coastal, independent
women" - which helped volunteers focus on contacting persuadable voters.
In Oregon, a vote-by-mail state, lists of those who voted were updated daily as their ballots were received. Using Activate, Jeff Merkley's campaign for U.S. Senate used these regularly updated voter lists to target volunteer calls only to people who had yet to vote - saving volunteer time and increasing the contact rate. The technology enabled campaign volunteers to speak with 127,191 voters. Although the race was initially called in favor of incumbent Senator Gordon Smith, the
outstanding votes tipped the race to Merkley by 50,000 votes.
The 2008 Presidential primary for the Democratic nomination was one of our closest yet. One of the ways in which the Clinton campaign won primaries and made history was with Activate. The Clinton campaign made 20 million calls using Activate, facilitating some of her most critical wins.
